Scott Sklar: The New Paradigm

Scott Sklar: I teach my classes that it’s always less expensive to save energy than generate it from any source.
And that’s true in data centers. That’s true in industrial centers, that’s true in government buildings. That’s true with schools. So let’s, It’s always cost effective.
So let’s reduce the electric need. And then that gives you so many options of what you can do on and around the building. And then you do your sort of your waste heat and your renewables and all that stuff that make, you know, practical sense, aesthetic sense.
And then whatever else you can’t meet, you use the grid for.
All of a sudden the grid becomes more stable because particularly in the middle of the summer, in the middle of winter when everybody needs energy or when we have this, you know, this week, uh, global, uh, sort of, sorry, US freeze on two thirds of the country, don’t don’t go down.
So, but that’s what we have to do.
I think that that’s the new paradigm of how you think this through, uh, based on efficiency. Onsite generation, nearby generation, and then really have the grid fine tune for resiliency. Think of the grids not really as a hundred percent of your power. Think of your grids as augmenting the power, but a hundred percent reliable.
Uh, so our quality of life is maximized and all of a sudden it takes a lot of the strains off the system. That everybody’s feeling right now. And natural gas prices with this freeze, this, this, uh, last week of January, 2026, uh, natural gas prices gone up 60%.
